graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)

ever since our schools closed (first for Spring Break, then for covid-19 reasons), my brother has been pressing me to continue my Ace Attorney playthrough, which i've been doing! we've been playing ace attorney, off and on, since 2018 -- i finished the first 2 games that year, and then it took me... over a year to finish game 3, lmao. (by which i mean, early last year we stopped in the middle of game 3 case 2, and we finally picked it back up this month.)

i say "we" -- my brother has already played the series, but he watches me play to vicariously experience the series again. we trade those roles (player and watcher/adviser) back and forth for many of the single player games we enjoy.

i finished game 3, Trials and Tribulations, yesterday! it was quite fun. also, the version of the game we played was the iPad app, which is... ahem... hilariously bad sometimes. (my brother claims that the apps for the later games are fine. it's just the app for games 1-3 that's bad.) they're not game-breaking glitches; mostly just typos, glitches in evidence descriptions, occasional kerning issues (???), and other bizarre text errors. these glitches are funny, but do break the mood at times.

he's now having me play Ace Attorney Investigations, which is great because you play as edgeworth. today i played the first case; was sorta tutorial-y, but still fun. also i have edgeworth's pursuit theme, "Lying Coldly," in my head now. ace attorney music is just so good...

(my brother also showed me this edgeworth meme, and i can't get over it)

as i mentioned earlier, my brother and i regularly swap roles on who plays games and who watches; he's recently begun playing Your Turn to Die, possibly because he noticed i was getting a little tired of being pressured to play Ace Attorney all the time and i tend to enjoy playing "his" games more when there's some reciprocity (as there was when he played Zero Escape and i played Hollow Knight.)

your turn to die spoilers thru chapter 2 )

of course, this means my brother will very shortly be done with YTTD (which means he'll have played all of the Danganronpa-Zero Escape-Your Turn to Die "death game" trifecta! he's been a DR fan for nearly as long as i have, so i'm glad that over the last 6 months he's finally played the other two series (he did enjoy ZE; i think he likes YTTD's story & chars, but is less impressed with some of its mechanics/minigames/horror flavor.)

i still have... 5 more ace attorney games to go, i think? the two investigations, then the second trilogy... which i do look forward to, but i also currently want to read Wrightworth fic without getting spoiled, lmao. maybe if i carefully filter out anything tagged with a later game or characters from games i haven't played yet...?

other than AA, i've been playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is exactly as fun and addicting as we've always expected an Animal Crossing game for the Switch would be. i've recently upgraded to an actual resident services building (including Isabelle!) i named my villager Kokichi, and my island Kibou, because (despite my brother's objections), naming it after SDR2's Jabberwock Island just would be too tonally dissonant for animal crossing, lmao

that's about it for games blogging, i might be back later this week with a school/life post or a tabletop RPGs post, or maybe not.

what games have y'all been playing?

graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)

going to get started early today (meaning, before midnight.) current status: Chapter Two, Part Two. spoilers for that below. maybe today i'll actually finish?? who knows!

YTTD spoilers up to the end of Chapter 2 )

Final thoughts/theories (still spoilers) )

and i have now finished all of the episodes currently released of Your Turn To Die! i hope the fandom continues to grow, and that we don't have to wait too long for the final chapter. i successfully managed to navigate the internet for the last few weeks without getting spoiled on much of anything, and considering how many people i follow on twitter/tumblr who are playing it, that's saying something.

graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)

when i left off last night, i was, in fact, still on Chapter Two, Part One. [below the cut i do eventually make it to Part Two, so spoilers for that.]

YTTD spoilers )

graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)

so as i mentioned yesterday, i've hopped on the Your Turn To Die bandwagon. i think i first saw someone mention it on twitter 2 weeks ago, started playing it myself a few days later, and since then i've seen large chunks of both the Danganronpa and Zero Escape fandoms jump into it. it's like we all heard the words "Death Game" and our collective heads spun around 180 degrees because oh shit it's our brand

Your Turn To Die is definitely in the same murder genre as DR/ZE, with a dash of horror and some Ace Attorney elements. (you can tell it has Ace Attorney elements because when i prove someone wrong it plays music so kickass i stop playing the game for 5 minutes just to revel in the music.) it can be found here, for free, and that link also provides like, an actual summary, and appropriate trigger warnings.

this game has also partially motivated me to post on dreamwidth again, because i don't want to spoil anyone by tweeting about it and i don't know what the best way to tag for spoilers on twitter is. (also i saw [personal profile] rionaleonhart post about it, and i realized wait, i can post YTTD stuff here!) i'm currently in Chapter Two, Part One, so the rest of this post is going to be spoilery for everything up to that.

ugh i GUESS i shouldn’t start a new civ 6 game since it’s already 23:22 and i have to wake up at 9:00 tomorrow

but i read the full patch notes for the new update and i wanna plaaay. climate change might be actually balanced now! and city states will have walls / more units at higher difficulties, so they can defend themselves! and also barbarian camps can’t spawn Giant Death Robots anymore, which is a little sad because that was fucking hilarious, especially the first time my brother & i encountered one. rest in peace, Barbarian Giant Death Robots.

also in bandori last week i full combo’d Senbonzakura <3 plus Keep On Moving, at least in the challenge live event. and the bandori english version now lets you pick your favorite songs! and in multi-live it shows whether or not you’ve cleared or FC’d the chosen song! so helpful!
graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)

this was going to be a full games post, but let's be honest: the only games i've been playing are bandori and civ 6, and i don't have anything to say about civ 6 except that 1) i won the last full-length game i played against my younger brother (diplomatic victory w/ America), and 2) the AI gets annoyingly aggressive in the ancient era on Immortal difficulty. i should consider playing alpha centauri more instead, where (checks notes) the AI is aggressive no matter what era it is, but will be slightly less aggressive early on than later.

now for the rest of the post, which is about bandori.

finally full combo'd that wily Dragon Night, which was a struggle because of god dang slide notes. this means i've officially FC'd everything that's lvl 24 or below, along with some of the 25s and 26s. \o/

also fc'd MOON PRIDE, so that's a success!

unfortunately i did not get White Day Kaoru (the card i was hoping to get in my last games post, but i at least avoided the temptation to buy any in-game currency for another shot once i'd spent all my saved-up currency. the statistics just do not make it worth it, no matter how beautiful she is.

also, i did at least get a different 4-star Kaoru card, the one i spent 30k stars trying to get in October, so... consolation prize?

the current event is a Live Goals event. someday i'd like to actually clear all the EX Goals, except that the EX lvl 4 Combo and Note goals are out of my reach (respectively: "clear a lvl 27+ song with a full combo," and "clear a lvl 26+ song with fewer than 10 Great or lower notes." funnily enough, the latter seems a lot more out of my reach than the former.) oh well, at this point i've cleared all the goals that are in my reach.

PICO!! is beginning to feel like my White Whale. i know it's not, because other songs have been my Big Goal before and even if it took a long time to full combo them, i did do it eventually and a while after that, FCing them became routine. these included Guren no Yumiya (hard) and Passionate Starmine (both hard and expert), among others.

(i tell myself, "you only have to FC it once." which is true, but once i've done it once, it becomes easier to do it again.)

still, i've been working on expert PICO!! since at least december, probably earlier. so it's beginning to feel like my nemesis. or it would, except i still really like the song. that helps.

other songs i'm working on FCing include A Cruel Angel's Thesis, Senbonzakura, only my railgun, and R-I-O-T. these are also all songs i quite like. the ones i don't care to listen to much are also ones i don't really care about FCing.

graveexcitement: ouma kokichi (ndrv3) (ouma >:3c)

bandori: got full combo on expert 1, 2, Fanclub! been working on that one for a little while, so it feels nice to finally FC it. also just FC'd Life Will Change, which is nice. level 26 songs are currently my "challenging but achievable" level; 27 is "barely possible if the stars align," and 25 is "routine." 24 and below is "easy." (well, i say easy, but Dragon Night's slides continue to rob me of the FC :P). so i like going after level 26 songs.

(ETA: YES!! just FC'd Red Fraction!! sweet, sweet victory.)

also, tomorrow the White Day event and gacha open up... i'm really hoping to get Kaoru's 4-star card; but gacha is gacha and even though i've saved up enough stars to roll 9-10 times... chances are still slim, haha. she's beautiful, though *u*
Kaoru Seta in a white suit

ace attorney: the funny thing about ace attorney is that i'm lukewarm about the idea of sitting down to play it when i'm not playing it, but when i am playing it i greatly enjoy myself.

...wait, why is that a "funny thing," that's just my usual attitude towards media i haven't experienced yet...
anyways, as a result of that and me playing it with my brother (so both of us have to be awake & available), i haven't played all that much & my progress is slow. i'm in the middle of game 3, case 2. enjoying it though! i was hoping to play some tonight but i think my brother might have homework P:

civilization 6: the newest expansion for civ 6 came out on Valentine's Day, and i really like it! the new mechanics are cool, though if anything the climate change mechanic could go further / be more extreme. the new civs are cool too, though some of them are frankly overpowered, imo - Sweden comes to mind, and my brother and i have found that Hungary's abilities can be abused heavily, if you do it right. i'm tempted to start a new single-player game tonight, but i really should be writing instead.

zero time dilemma mega spoilers )

overall, i very much enjoyed this game, and i hope y'all enjoyed my blogging of it.

now, i finished the game somewhere between 4 and 5. at that moment, i thought, "finally, i can go to bed at a reasonable hour!" then, in the very next instant, i thought, "wait, but i want to read the fanfiction!" and it is now 9:30. (i've been excited to read zero escape fic since i finished 999 but i couldn't because spoilers and now i am free, it is amazing even if i sacrificed my sleep.)

(the bulk of this reading time was spent on The First Nonary Game, by [archiveofourown.org profile] airdeari. apparently this fic was only completed relatively recently; i feel myself quite lucky, to have been able to read it all in one go.)

honestly, my favorite game of the three may still be 999. i'm not certain of this, especially because i do love many of the characters/concepts/themes in the other two games, but 999 just feels very tight. (also, snake's in it, which is definitely points in its favor.)

hmm, starting to yawn now. as with any time that i'm sleep deprived, i have only two choices: succumb to sleep, or read something so that my brain wakes up again. since my grandma and aunt don't fly back til sometime tomorrow, and will in fact probably be here relatively soon, i may be stuck with the second one.

that's all right. i wanted to read more fanfic anyway.

this should surprise no one, but it's time for more zero time dilemma. spoilers ahoy!

before i jump in to the game, i'm going to try and collect my thoughts/theories/curiosities.

thoughts & theories (ZTD spoilers) )

...and of course, once i got all that written up, i got distracted by playing minecraft with my friends. (and after all that deliberation on whether to play zero escape or be with pals, too...)

ok now to like... try to actually... play the game... maybe??
gameplay (ZTD spoilers) )

good night, y'all.
graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)
no other games today, just zero time dilemma
zero time dilemma spoilers )

hmmm. this could very well be a situation where the fact that it's nearly 6am is hindering my logical reasoning skills again. so i guess i'll go to sleep, and maybe tomorrow i'll go "wait, it must be THIS!" and solve one of the things.

ETA: dangit, i just thought of another thing to try, but i’m already in bed. it’ll have to wait.

also, brief life update as well; my grandma and aunt were meant to arrive yesterday (i don't count it as the "next day" until i go to sleep or the sun comes up, so yesterday is Wednesday) but their flight was cancelled and they had to come late today (Thursday) instead. so tomorrow (Friday) we're having a second round of gift opening (gifts they gave us and gifts we gave them -- plus some gifts that shipped late.) so i'm excited for that, though obviously not excited enough to go to bed at a reasonable hour. then we'll probably be doing Family Social Activities, so i won't be back to zero escape until tomorrow night (Friday night), most likely. maybe in ~15 hours, i'll have figured out what to do in ZTD.
graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)
i am on a roll this week in bandori! full combo'd expert Silhouette just now. it's not a song i usually play, which is why it's neat when people in multiplayer pick songs that aren't played that often. (you know, instead of FUWA-FUWA TIME for the eight thousandth time. no, i'm not salty, why do you ask?) i also just played Goka! Gokai!? Phantom Thief! on expert for the first time, and while i did barely manage to clear it, i was going what the fuck is going on the whole time.

anyhow, back to zero escape.

zero time dilemma spoilers )

anyhow. going to bed shortly. had a good christmas -- my younger brother got Super Smash Bros Ultimate, so me and my siblings played that for a few hours earlier. it's fun! we didn't open all of our presents, though, as my grandma and aunt are flying in later today, so we decided to hold off on opening the presents from them til they get here. so later today (since it's already 7am now lmao) we'll have christmas part 2: electric boogaloo. hopefully i'll be awake and not completely sleep deprived. lmao.

(this is becoming a pattern for me with zero escape. after my last final a few weeks ago i came home and played Virtue's Last Reward, and then i kept playing for the next eleven or so hours, give or take, because i was finally at the point where i was Figuring Out All The Things.)

anyways!! this has gone on long enough! i'll actually sleep now.
graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)
what can i say? staying up til 4am the night before the one day in which my family, yknow, may want to get up early to open presents... might not have been my smartest choice, but the lure of zero escape was too strong.

so far i've finished Q-END 1 and D-END 1. (and CQD-END 1 but that doesn't really mean anything.)

zero time dilemma spoilers )

also, when playing bandori earlier i selected Pasupa Revolutions by accident and wound up getting a full combo on expert, so there's another rhythm game success.

ETA: in pokemon go just now i caught a shiny Houndour and a quest reward let me catch a porygon!! another victory c:

anyhow, i really can't justify staying up any later (not that i had a good justification for staying up this late... it was more just "oh, it's only ~1, i'll play some zero escape" and then "oh, it's 4am now") so i will head to bed. merry christmas, y'all!
graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)
this week in bandori i got full combos on expert for B.O.F. and Koi wa Chaos no Shimobenari, so i am officially marking this week up as a Success. now if only i could get a full combo on expert PICO!!!... that's the dream.

bandori (aka BanG Dream!) is the only rhythm game i play these days, because i got fed up with love live. it's funny, because as a kid i was always rotten at DDR, guitar hero, rock band, etc. turns out i can be decent at rhythm games if i get to tap the notes directly on my phone! so over the last year or so i've been playing some phone rhythm games -- first love live, then bandori (and i highly prefer bandori for a variety of reasons), and i've been slowly improving. at this point i can clear pretty much all but the most difficult songs on expert -- it's cool to be able to look back and remember "oh yeah, back in april i was still struggling with some of these songs on hard, but now i can do most of them on expert!"

also, i mostly play this game for the game and not the story (even tho i've heard it's got a p good story), but Kaoru is my #1 fave and today i joined a multiplayer lobby, saw that someone's username was "Kaoru is worst girl," and immediately left that lobby, because how dare you >:(

the other night i commissioned [twitter.com profile] cactuskhee for a sketch commission of Snake from 999 (the first Zero Escape game), and i love it so much, i'm making it my new default icon. Snake has rapidly become one of my top favorite characters, along with Ouma Kokichi (NDRv3) and Aizawa Shouta (BNHA). i'm not sure what, if anything, those 3 faves say about me as a person, but they're def the characters who have most thoroughly lodged themselves in my heart/brain in the last year or so.

speaking of zero escape, i'm several hours into Zero Time Dilemma and, as to be expected, my intrigue is growing. "Life is truly unfair" seems to be Zero's running catchphrase here, and i am very curious to find out what that's about.
graveexcitement: Snake from 999 (Default)
zero time dilemma is like $22 now instead of $40, i feel EXTREMELY vindicated for waiting for the steam winter sale to buy it.
