so as i mentioned yesterday, i've hopped on the Your Turn To Die bandwagon. i think i first saw someone mention it on twitter 2 weeks ago, started playing it myself a few days later, and since then i've seen large chunks of both the Danganronpa and Zero Escape fandoms jump into it. it's like we all heard the words "Death Game" and our collective heads spun around 180 degrees because oh shit it's our brand
Your Turn To Die is definitely in the same murder genre as DR/ZE, with a dash of horror and some Ace Attorney elements. (you can tell it has Ace Attorney elements because when i prove someone wrong it plays music so kickass i stop playing the game for 5 minutes just to revel in the music.) it can be found here, for free, and that link also provides like, an actual summary, and appropriate trigger warnings.
this game has also partially motivated me to post on dreamwidth again, because i don't want to spoil anyone by tweeting about it and i don't know what the best way to tag for spoilers on twitter is. (also i saw
rionaleonhart post about it, and i realized wait, i can post YTTD stuff here!) i'm currently in Chapter Two, Part One, so the rest of this post is going to be spoilery for everything up to that.
when i went to bed, i was in the middle of... i think Day Three of the trust bartering/death attractions segment? i stopped when it was time for Negotiations and the three options were the three dead characters >.>
(me during the first Negotiation: "why would i decide not to discuss anything with anyone?" me now: "...ah.")
overall this game is like... i'm never completely sure, during certain choice points, if i'm fucking things up big time, or if the outcome would be similar either way. i'll definitely be interested in watching LPs of this once i've finished. like:
- should i have done the 6-star Death Attraction with Reko? she was right about the math, but the Prize Exchange booth offers 2 stars for sale - is that 2 stars available per person, or just 2 period? because if it's 2 per person, then we can just get stars that way.
- afterward, Nao asked to talk to me about Reko, but i passed that up for... i think a convo with Kanna and Sou. was that a dangerous choice? who knows!
- and... i'm actually blanking on other stuff here but you get the picture
characters-wise, my favorites so far are Kai, Keiji, and Sou.
- Kai: i immediately liked him, and thought "shit, this is going to be like with Korekiyo, isn't it?" (aka: extremely problematic long-haired fave (though in Korekiyo's case, his being a fave didn't really persist long beyond V3 Chapter 3.)) the whole 'stalker' business seemed to confirm this, but his death scene and then other info in Chapter Two Part One have un-confirmed it.
- Keiji: maaan i don't know what's up with Keiji but i want to help him? he's probably my favorite of the still-living characters, maybe favorite overall, idk? like, idk what's in your past, dude, but i wanna hug you,, i just want you to be safe and happy
- Sou: almost as soon as i saw DR fans start talking about this game, i saw Sou described as "green Komaeda," though in truth i suspect he may be closer to Ouma? i mean, at this point i don't really know -- he flips between morally ambiguous/just trying to survive and 'actual bastard,' but i'm thinking he's probably more of an Ouma type.
the other characters are also fun. Alice gives kind of a Gundham Tanaka vibe; Reko is very cool; Nao and Kanna and Gin are all very sweet. i don't really feel much towards Q-Taro, though i am concerned about his demeanor in the last in-game day or so. what happened, dude? i didn't expect to care that much for Joe, since he seemed the Standard Cheerful Bestie type, but i did cry when he died.
anyways now that i've rambled for a while and then spun my wheels scrolling through tumblr, i figure i'll actually play for an hour or two - maybe finish ch 2 part 1?
actual gameplay pseudo-liveblogging section
ok, where was i? right... deciding what to do at the negotiations screen... safest thing to do is just not discuss with anyone, but i am morbidly curious what happens if i talk to Kai. will my hallucination level go up? i mean, he's not Joe... :P but uh, i guess i'll play it safe for now.
...oh, the game dialog even says "Don't negotiate with hallucinations and advance time?", that's cute. hmm, maybe --
oh. i... i MAY have clicked kai... out of curiosity. this is... bad. i am being invited to Go to Hell in the move menu. can't save even if i wanted to. well. i don't particularly want to advance further by attacking or injuring the hallucinations, so. let's just reload, shall we?
wait. i hope i haven't accidentally reached the end of this section without spending any tokens. i might have to reload from an earlier save if it turns out that's the case. hopefully they give me a chance to spend first?
anyways... what are these name/occupation cards? we just got 2 more of them. more specifically, what's up with the percentages? my first instinct is "likelihood of survival" (putting Sara at the top); possibly supported by the fact that the elementary and middle school students have the lowest numbers. but the numbers all add up to exactly 100, which would be a little weird if my theory is true, and is somewhat odd regardless considering that there's 5 people who are not on any of the cards we've found, but who were on the blackboard in the bar. (Joe, Kai, Sou, Nao, and Kugie -- pretty sure Kugie is Kanna's older sister?) also of note is the name on the card listed as 0.0% - Shin Tsukumi, "self-employed," who was not listed on the blackboard, according to my notes. (i've been keeping physical notes like i did for much of zero escape.) someone might be lying about their name, but fwiw i'm pretty sure the dolls have addressed both Sou and Joe by their full names ("Sou Hiyori," "Joe Tazuna") and it might be a bit odd for them to help with a facade like that. hmm. so between the blackboard and the cards, we have 21 names - 20 from the blackboard, 16 from the cards, and 15 of them overlap. (sara hasn't noticed that there's 21 total names instead of 20, but i sure did!)
god damn, but i'm going to be listening to certain songs from this soundtrack on repeat once i'm done. (i've heard the title screen music is actually a TAZ remix, but i haven't gotten far enough into TAZ to actually verify that? might be funny if i do get to that point in TAZ and go "wait, isn't this from YTTD?"
...dammit, if i have to go through all this again because i was hoarding my tokens til the end and didn't realize i was about to hit a point where it was too late to spend them, i'll be slightly peeved :P
and even more so considering this goddamn "final attraction," jesus christ. i... can't imagine sacrificing one of us 3 is the "right choice" here, but "give up" is not promising either. (also, sometimes the lack of context for choices scares me. like, would "sacrifice Nao" mean telling her she should sacrifice herself, or would it mean pushing her in? because thoooose are very different, haha. ha. um, i'm inclined to either give up and hope someone finds a non-deadly solution, or sacrifice myself and hope it doesn't end in immediate game-over... ok, picked sacrifice self, and (after a joe-hallucination/memory was oddly helpful) now i'm once again like, would that have happened no matter what i picked, or would one or more of those options have been actually deadly? >.>
[some time later] okay, if i don't get a chance to spend my tokens after this, then i don't care. well, i might reload an earlier save and spend them just to gain whatever info i can, but i'm not going to replay this whole trial so that Sara will have that info, in-game.
still haven't finished this Final Attraction (so i still haven't finished Chapter Two Part One), but i guess i need to sleep now instead of continuing :P.
