graveexcitement: aizawa shouta (bnha) (aizawa)

a snippet of a BNHA AU i may or may not be writing. (by which i mean, this is all i've written, and i'm not reliable, so who knows if i'll write enough to make a full story.) this is all totally first draft, so it's subject to change. ~800 words.

set after the most recent manga chapter (210), so, minor spoiler warning, i guess? it shouldn't actually spoil anything plot relevant. also, very AU, or at least headed in that direction.

Monoma Neito didn't know exactly what Midoriya's quirk was. Not that it was hard to guess -- it obviously was some kind of strength enhancement. Typical of Class A and their big, flashy powers. But raw power wasn't everything! Versatility was key, and Monoma planned to prove that to Midoriya and the rest of Class A in this match.

So no, he didn't know what Midoriya's quirk was, but he didn't expect that to be a problem. When he copied a quirk, his quirk also provided him with instinctive knowledge of what the quirk was and how to use it. It wasn't perfect knowledge; it wasn't equal to the innate knowledge most people had of their quirks from living with them for their entire lives, but it gave him what he needed to know to use it for five minutes.

That's why copying Midoriya's quirk shouldn't have been a problem. Not that he expected to beat Midoriya with that power alone, of course, but that quirk in his arsenal for the next five minutes... it could be Class A's downfall.

The lightest of touches on Midoriya's body was enough; then he sprang away, a smirk on his face. Of course, he couldn't neglect the first quirk he'd copied, his Plan A. Brainwashing was so useful. "Hey, Midoriya, how well do you think your teammates will fare against your own quirk?"

Midoriya's eyes widened and his previously combat-ready stance faltered. He appeared to be struggling with the urge to speak. Would he fall for it, even suspecting that Monoma had copied Brainwashing? His grin grew wider.

But Midoriya hesitated to speak, and Monoma gave his quirk a quick check, to figure out how to activate it. Surely seeing his own quirk before his eyes would make Midoriya fall victim to Brainwashing!

...

Hold on.

What was this...?

The quirk he'd copied didn't have anything to do with strength. Or speed. Or power.

His new quirk was the ability to permanently pass down a quirk to someone else via his DNA.

What?

This... made no sense. But it didn't matter. All it meant was that he couldn't use Midoriya's quirk for this fight. Any more time spent trying to figure it out would be a waste. And despite this setback, victory against Class A was in his grasp...!

Two minutes later, Uraraka and a Class A boy whose name he didn't care to remember had captured him and put him in the designated jail. Disgraceful. His chance to show up those Class A loudmouths, and he'd blown it. He could only hope that his classmates and Shinsou could make up for his loss.

Since he was in the jail, the only thing to do was lick his wounds (Uraraka had gotten a good hit on his face; blood trickled from his nose) and think. There was a lot to think about, but what had his attention the most was, What the hell is this quirk I copied from Midoriya?

The power to pass down power... it was like no quirk he'd ever heard of. He prided himself on his versatility, on his knowledge of every quirk under the sun -- he relied on that knowledge, because he needed to be able to adapt to a new quirk at a moment's notice. But this... what was this?

He still had it copied, and would for another few minutes. Yet he still didn't understand it. A quirk that could be passed on through DNA, directly -- not in the usual "child inherits parent's quirk" way, but that it could be gifted to someone if they consumed the user's DNA.

But why? What purpose would that serve? There were useless quirks, of course, but this was beyond the pale. The quirk didn't do anything else -- its whole power was that it could be passed on. It was both completely revolutionary and entirely useless. It was also completely unrelated to Midoriya's strength-enhancing quirk, so why did he have it?

Unless...

Unless...

What if the pass-down quirk didn't just pass down itself? What if it could pass down another quirk? It would bypass the usual limitations and variability of passing down your quirk to your child. You could pass it down and it would be unaltered; plus you could pass it to someone unrelated to you. And crucially, could it be used to give a quirk to someone who already had one?

Blood trickled down to his mouth, and Monoma licked his lips. His tongue tingled slightly. If that was the nature of the pass-down quirk, and Midoriya had that same quirk.... then he could only have received it from someone else. And wouldn't that explain his legendary struggles with his own quirk, the strength quirk that kept breaking his bones? It wasn't his. Someone had given it to him.

now i wish i had been at the thread at the time.

and well, i guess i could just go back to kintsugi and read the thread but i’m not sure if i’d be up for potentially dealing with kintsugi drama again. (which probs isn’t in that particular thread but reading one thread might lead to reading other threads and reading other threads might lead to the latest kintsugi drama sooo... i’ve been staying away from kintsugi.)
